This is an official corporate site of Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill, one of the oldest Russian pulp and paper mills.
The mill was launched in 1939 in the centre of Karelian Republic by Lake Vyg. The town with a beautiful name Segezha was built together with the mill. Segezha is located 700 km to the North from Saint Petersburg .
At that time the most powerful paper machines in Europe produced kraft paper at the mill. Segezha mill became the largest producer of kraft paper, sack paper and paper sacks in Russia. The mill was awarded with the Order of Lenin, one of the highest appraisals of the Soviet State.
The mill has been continuously renovated and underwent major technological reconstruction in 1960s, and became Open Joint Stock Company in 1992.
Today the mill is able to produce up to 400'000 tons of sulphate pulp, 350'000 tons of sack paper and more than 500 million of paper sacks.
From wood to pulp.
Wood comes to Segezha mill as logs or chips from saw mills. The logs from the wood yard are slashed, debarked and chipped, and then go to the digester or are stored for future use.
The production process starts at the two KMW pulp lines, where the chips are processed and cooked into pulp. As already mentioned, our digesters are able to produce 400 thousands tons of high quality unbleached sulphate pulp annually.
From the by-products of digesting we produce tall oil and rosin, and what is even more important, we conserve power and heat and also protect the environment by utilising black liquor, which is a by-product of cooking, for heating and green liquor for a further cooking process. The pulp is then used for paper production.
Where pulp becomes paper
The pulp from cooking plant is then converted into kraft and sack paper on our three paper machines. One of these machines will soon be able to manufacture kraftliner, which is needed for corrugated board packaging. Our equipment is able to manufacture a wide range of kraft paper from 70 g/m2 to 115 g/m2. We also produce polyethylene coated paper and bitumen paper for moisture protection of packed products
How the sacks are made
Segezha is the largest manufacturer of sacks in Russia and supplied in the past over 60 % of all sacks for the former Soviet Union. Bitumen sacks manufactured here are completely waterproof. Sack production is highly customised - sacks are produced to order with a range of strength properties and varying numbers of paper plies. Segezha mill can produce sewn or glued, open mouth or valve sacks.
Paper sacks are used by producers of cement, foodstuffs, animal food, and in chemical industries. Segezha's aim is to increase and develop the sack market in Russia as, obviously, sack packaging is a very important requirement in this country.
